Loungewear has been one of the fastest-growing apparel categories since 2020 and shows no signs of slowing down. The category — co-ordinated tops and bottoms designed for comfort at home but presentable enough to wear outside — has expanded from a niche product to a core category for UK, US and European brands across every price point. Defining the Loungewear Category

Loungewear sits at the intersection of sleepwear, activewear and casualwear. The defining characteristics are: soft, comfortable fabric; relaxed, non-restrictive fit; co-ordinated top and bottom that work as a set; and a presentable aesthetic that works beyond the home. The category includes pullover sweatshirts, zip tops, wide-leg trousers, joggers, shorts and co-ordinated sets.

Fabrics for Loungewear

60% Cotton / 40% Polyester

The most common loungewear fabric blend. The cotton provides softness and natural feel; the polyester adds durability, shape retention and reduces shrinkage. At 220–280gsm, this blend produces a fabric that is comfortable, washable and holds its shape through repeated wear. It is the most cost-effective option for mid-market loungewear.

100% Cotton

100% cotton loungewear has a more natural, premium feel. It is slightly heavier and warmer than the 60/40 blend at the same GSM. It is more prone to shrinkage and requires more careful care instructions. 100% cotton is the correct choice for brands positioning at a premium price point or requiring organic cotton certification (GOTS or OCS).

French Terry

French terry is the most popular construction for premium loungewear. The looped reverse provides comfort without the weight of brushed fleece. At 220–280gsm in French terry, loungewear feels light, breathable and premium — ideal for year-round wear.

Construction Details

Waistbands

Elasticated waistband is standard for joggers and wide-leg trousers. Drawcord options: flat, round or no drawcord. A matching or tonal drawcord adds a premium detail. Exposed elastic waistband is more casual; covered elastic gives a cleaner finish.

Pockets

Side seam pockets are standard on trousers. Patch pockets on tops add functionality. Pocket placement and construction should be specified — pockets that pull or gap are a common quality issue.

Sizing for Loungewear

Loungewear sizing is more relaxed than tailored apparel, but measurement consistency between tops and bottoms within a co-ord set is critical. Buyers expect the top and bottom of a set to look proportionally matched when worn together. Request a full set sample in your core size before approving bulk.
